Ralph Vaughan Williams said of the Arts,
“The Arts are necessary for a full life. The Arts are the means by which we look through the magic casements and see what lies beyond.”
In the academic year 2007/08 South Wigston High School became South Wigston High School and Arts College.
There are three main subject areas which are at the forefront of what we offer:
- English, focussing on the written and spoken word
- Art and Design
- Music

However every area of the school reflects our status as an Arts College. For instance in French and German lessons, pupils perform the language they are learning. In PE there is an enhanced emphasis on Dance. In Science Drama groups are invited in to support what the pupils are learning.
Outside of normal classroom time pupils have a wide range of extra activities which they are encouraged to take part in. We run an extensive range of Music and Drama productions. There are a lot of trips providing pupils with a chance to widen their experience of the Arts, such as the Years 7 and 8 trip to London.
We also invite eminent artists, musicians and writers into school to work with our pupils, and several times a year we run special theme days where it is possible to give pupils the chance to learn extra skills, such as playing the didgeridoo or African Drums.
Arts Status has meant a new and exciting chapter in the continuing story of our school and has led to a creative approach to learning.
